We were excited to be able to reschedule this assembly from a 2018 snow day. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for good weather! Smithsonian Associates Discovery Theater will be coming to Hillcrest on Monday, February 4 with their spirit-rousing musical, Black Diamond, about the “other” major league.
This updated hit from nationally recognized arts leader Michael Bobbitt and tunesmith John Cornelius chronicles the struggles and triumphs of pioneering African American baseball players. The all-star lineup of heroes includes Moses “Fleet” Walker, who became the game’s first black pro in the 1880s; Andrew “Rube” Foster, hailed as the father of black baseball; power hitter Josh “Spitfire” Gibson; athlete-philosopher Satchel Paige; and young Jackie Robinson, who first integrated the major leagues. You’ll stand up and cheer for the players who made sports history-and American history, too!

Sineadh Fada: Spórt – Traditional Irish Music & Dance
Hillcrest is gearing up for St. Patrick’s Day with Sineadh Fada’s performance of Spórt. Dancer/musician Shannon Dunne and musical collaborators, including multi-instrumentalist Alex Boatright, present an engaging, interactive performance showcasing traditional Irish music and dance. The artists will introduce old style percussive and social dances, traditional “sing-along” songs, and Irish tunes on instruments like concertina, harp, and fiddle.
Students will learn what it means to be a traditional musician/dancer, and experience a wide array of instruments, singing, and dancing through the stories of how Shannon and her friends learned, and continue to learn, within the tradition.
On Thursday, January 10th from 6 to 8 pm, the PTA is hosting a meeting at Banneker Recreation Center (27 Main Avenue, Catonsville). The presentation for this meeting will be provided by HES and will focus on supporting parents, particularly those of ELL students, in the success of their children. All families are welcome. Dinner and child care will be provided. Those interested in attending should RSVP to Mrs. Capka at mcapka@bcps.org.
